The CRTC has withdrawn a controversial proposal that would have given TV and radio stations more leeway to broadcast false or misleading news.
Indeed, the broadcast regulator now says it never wanted the regulatory change in the first place and was only responding to orders from a parliamentary committee.
The committee last week quietly withdrew its request for regulatory amendments in the face of a public backlash.
With that, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission was only too happy to drop the idea altogether.
The proposed change would have considerably narrowed the scope of the current ban to cover only false or misleading news that could endanger the lives, health or safety of the public.
“All I can say is, ‘Thank you, committee,”‘ CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein told the specialty publication The Wire Report last week.
“I will withdraw this proposal tomorrow. This is the end of this issue.”

Thanks 4 the tip dood, though I dunno if this is a win or not. It sounds like it may be Orwellian, or we’re supposed to think it’s good when it’s actually bad politically correct censorship of the Canadian marketplace of ideas, like we’re too dumb to handle free enterprise, check stuff out and think for ourselves. They might consider The Alex Jones Radio Show as “false or misleading news” and I have no idea what the current “ban” on it really means. A branch of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), the Target Approval and Review Committee (TARC) grants or denies the ability to put a suspect or group under surveillance and open a clandestine investigation. It is chaired by the Director of CSIS (currently Richard Fadden), senior CSIS officers and representatives from the Department of Justice and Deputy Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
In March 1991, TARC amended their previous regulations, and included a requirement that the Solicitor General must be consulted before allowing any investigation.
“The range of investigative techniques to be deployed under this authorization will be subject to consultation with the Minister.”
From this point on, the Service was required to send an aide-mémoire to the Solicitor General – prior to implementing the TARC Certificate.

We need to find better options soon and get offline to avoid just being updated and turning into cheap caricatures of ourselves with broken english comments. We need to start talking to our neighbours about how to push for better polices.
Fortunately, the mass media is finally doing a great job of revealing the possibily of a conspiracy, or several, to screw us. Now, we have to beat the mind control of arguing about what reality is and see what we can agree to work on instead.
Carol Goar from the Star (below) wrote about our criminal government spending, who was federally in charge of G20 Martial Law, what “North American” security could mean, why governments cut funds and whether our army supports torture.
She does a great job, we just have to add the fiat money system fraud, our Bank of Canada to use, the fake “left vs. right”, plans to collapse the economy and trap us in a police state, the new world order and so on. The openings are right there.
Regardless of what people believe, everyone knows something is wrong, which means there’s something to be done about it. That’s enough. All adults over 25 should start figuring out what we can do and share it with to give us all options.
Once that becomes normal, or thinking about what to do about this stuff instead of getting used to doing nothing about it, then we’ll have a foothold in the culture to work with. This is a last stand for the fate of the human mind. Let’s use them.

Pesticides found on fruit and vegetables could be doing untold damage to male fertility, research suggests.
Thirty of 37 crop chemicals tested interfered with the action of testosterone, the sex hormone critical to a healthy male reproductive system.
Worryingly, 16 of the 30 had not previously been linked with hormone disruption.
Environmental campaigners say the effects could be particularly severe in the womb, with lack of testosterone feminising unborn boys, raising their odds of reproductive defects at birth and low sperm counts and testicular cancer in later life.
The European Commission-funded research was carried out on cells in a lab. The British scientists behind the work say they cannot be sure that humans would be similarly affected, but more extensive testing is urgently needed. The study from the University of London’s School of Pharmacy focused on pesticides widely used in Europe.

The U.S. military’s Northern Command, however, publicized the agreement with a statement outlining how its top officer, Gen. Gene Renuart, and Canadian Lt.-Gen. Marc Dumais, head of Canada Command, signed the plan, which allows the military from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a civil emergency.

Just a head’s up, since London, England gets a lot of “police state” — a PSYOP term — really “corporate-bankster state” policies — first, we can see the latest at Infowars on the the preparations for mass protests in the near future. There’s no way the state would be able to use SAS Special Forces Commandos hopped up on adrenalin, fear and anger on peaceful people calmly and consistently fighting the info war by postering, flyering, sharing dvd’s, holding meetings and petitioning politicians. But thousands of people yelling angrily? Yep, here comes the SAS.
Frankly, as the only person in the world I know saying “F–k A Protest!” so far when it comes to handling our issues and the global recession, I also know most people can easily intellectually understand why they’re not worth the risk based on what’s accomplished, which usually isn’t much. We’re supposed to “feel” like they do with how courageously we take on heavily armed police (etc.) and get away with it, but we didn’t see the G20 protests in Toronto do anything to deal with G20 Summit policies, which the protest model of dissent virtually ignored.
Before we get brainwashed by TV and zombie on out to yell, get beat up and go home again, perhaps it’s a good idea to consider fighting the info war to think of more solutions. Just like before the G20 Summit in Toronto, the media will do a great job telling people how much security the state is prepared to use for future protests. Then, nobody can complain much when they get the crap kicked out of them as public support gets divided. When protests are the only option activists consider, it makes everybody else feel hopeless and side with the government.
Anyway, it’s getting warmer, so before it gets hot, we have options in the info war.
We can choose to use all our options, or just act like sheep and get slaughtered.
Keep in mind the military is trained to break stuff and kill people. Like protesters.

Leaked Memo: Government Considering Deploying Special Forces Troops On The Streets With Police

The British government is considering plans to deploy crack trained SAS commandos onto the streets to work alongside police in “counter-terrorism surveillance teams”, according to a leaked memo unveiled by the Times Of London today.
The justification given in the memo is to counter “Al Qaeda’s International Operations wing”, which security officials believe is adamant on carrying out a Mumbai style terror attack to inflict mass casualties on the streets of London.
The restricted Whitehall document notes that under the plans, the SAS could relocate to a base in central London in order to cut down response time.
The document states that terrorists are seeking to use suicide or car bombs or the use of “firearms against aircraft and airport targets”.
It is claimed that the Royal Wedding in May and the 2012 Olympics are high profile events that could be targeted by terrorists, and that the incident involving the student protest “attack” on the car of Prince Charles last year shows that extra security is required.

Just a head’s up, I heard Webster Tarpley’s excellent radio show about what’s going on with the people’s rebellion in Wisconsin. While he applauds like everyone should, he lets them know they also need to offer alternatives or the whole thing will fizzle out soon. These options involve protesters getting more informed and making sure they carefully explain to everyone else how they not only represent their interests, but also the interests, rights, freedoms and prosperity of everyone where they live.
After virtually ignoring them for decades, the mass media is now suddenly being relentless in their promotion of protests. It’s to the point where shadow government propaganda programmers coordinating all this behind the scenes are now almost completely obvious — unless we get really, really, really into it — in which case it’s happy news we like. Either way, (sigh) it looks like people are going to protest. So, they should add the “info war” educational component Tarpley mentioned above.
Otherwise… we’ll just get to enjoy all the violence and none of the policy-changing results we never aimed for. We’ve seen years of movies and TV shows that show cops and other law enforcement beating the hell out of people and declaring martial law to train both the police and public to accept it. Here we are in a worsening global recession and right on cue people are being encouraged to protest so the cops can do what they’re trained to do, often with public support. Let’s review ALL our options.

people need to understand the main reason we’re discouraged from learning about “real” politics is because the super-rich evil people who control the system want to screw us even harder and don’t want us to be able to fight back. they make it boring, confusing, pointless and so on from most perspectives. the one that makes the most sense is the best “conspiracy theories” that expose their lies, or the only way scams won’t work anymore.

THE MOTIVE: FOLLOW THE MONEY
Islamic banks have been eating into Rothschild profits in the Middle East because: they don’t charge interest (Shariah Law), they are growing very rapidly among the world’s exploding Muslim populations, and (in these catastrophic economic times) they are more stable than western banks.
While it is a very good thing that people are freed from the tyranny of dictators, they also need to be freed from the tyranny of economic control and serfdom. The relevant moral question is: Do the means justify the end?.
Deposed Tunisian President Ben Ali’s son-in-law, Sakher El Materi, opened Tunisia’s first Islamic bank, Zitouna Bank, on May 26, 2010. Zitouna Bank is the first Islamic bank in the Maghreb region [North Africa]. The bank was a first step toward Ben Ali’s new program of extensive reforms, “Tunisia, a Pole for Banking Services and a Regional Financial Centre”, which would have undermined the power and the profits of the Central Bank of Tunisia (privately-owned by the Rothschilds and their associates).

yezzurr, thanks and i’m glad you guys liked it, pass it on, i figure it’s especially appropriate to pass this stuff on to a message board, similar to passing on warnings that masturbation can make you go blind on a porn site, if that were true, and the jury’s still out. beyond the fraud, which is insulting, there’s also the concept of the effects over “time” as part of long-term business plans made by big institutions worldwide.
just imagine if the govt. hired people, or created robotic automated online personas, to post tons of random non-sequiters on message boards and more everywhere, or things that army psyop psychologists calculate to be funny, simply because they’re short and different and make fun of or piss on anything that’s been said. they can literally try to change or “dead” topics so quickly that nobody can think about them.
then imagine if there are so many “sockpuppet” posts that they become normal and everybody else just goes along and starts communicating like that. then imagine if nobody wants to think of anything to say anymore because they know nobody else wants to think about and take it seriously. so, people type less, stop building online relations that can lead to offline ones and start to feel more isolated and paranoid.
if that sounds crazy, then imagine where this goes next. of course, people can do what they want, but in a world where we’re bombarded by mediadvertising telling us what we want to do, it can help to understand why. for the people in charge, this isn’t just about the cash, not when we get a lot of stuff free. this is about control through what’s heavily promoted and how it works to change our behaviour over time.
radio host alan watt is usually good at explaining this concept, i haven’t heard this show on this article yet, but he brought it to our attention, so i’m sure it’s solid. check it out at the link below. we need to control our culture’s control over us, or we won’t know how many aspects are meant to destroy our balls and brains through long-term use. if we understand that, we can figure out how to use it for our own ends.

Just a head’s up, when we barely talk online, it’s a lot easier for govt. spooks to talk to and fool us, just like they publicly admit by having job postings for it.
When we stop thinking and just “Thumbs up!” or down for mass social approval and disapproval, the whole process can be controlled, from fudging numbers, to content.
Consensus can be carefully developed online to fool people into thinking that other people think a certain way until they decide to, thereby controlling what we think.
This is the final stage of globalist destabilization beginning in the Middle-East and spreading worldwide via “Twitter” and “trending topics” that are controlled.
People who won’t talk to each other will join protests that do almost nothing but validate armies of police built to crack down on them while the system collapses.
Social networking tools are bizarrely isolating us in cheap caricatures of ourselves as we become less able to define and help improve ideas in-depth in conversations.
While this happens, the few strong spooky personalities who decide to agree with each other can easily control what is socially acceptable to discuss and what’s not.
Unless online conversations translate into better offline ones, we should find ways they can, plus understand why our language is being reduced and what to do about it.
We’ll end up talking to govt. or corporate robots if we just decide to speak in 140 characters or less, or future micro-twits even shorter, or grunts and barks, etc.
Frankly, it doesn’t matter whether one believes in the accidental or planned (aka conspiratorial) view of history: we’re here and this is happening, so what do we do?

UPDATED: The HB Gary Email That Should Concern Us All

As I wrote yesterday , there is a leaked email that has gotten surprisingly little attention around here. It’s the one where Aaron Barr discusses his intention to post at Daily Kos – presumably something negative about Anonymous, the hacking group. But that’s not the email I’m talking about here.
As I also mentioned yesterday, in some of the emails, HB Gary people are talking about creating “personas”, what we would call sockpuppets. This is not new. PR firms have been using fake “people” to promote products and other things for a while now, both online and even in bars and coffee houses.
But for a defense contractor with ties to the federal government, Hunton & Williams, DOD, NSA, and the CIA – whose enemies are labor unions, progressive organizations, journalists, and progressive bloggers, a persona apparently goes far beyond creating a mere sockpuppet.
According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HB Gary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated “persona management” software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.
Persona management entails not just the deconfliction of persona artifacts such as names, email addresses, landing pages, and associated content. It also requires providing the human actors technology that takes the decision process out of the loop when using a specific persona. For this purpose we custom developed either virtual machines or thumb drives for each persona. This allowed the human actor to open a virtual machine or thumb drive with an associated persona and have all the appropriate email accounts, associations, web pages, social media accounts, etc. pre-established and configured with visual cues to remind the actor which persona he/she is using so as not to accidentally cross-contaminate personas during use.
And all of this is for the purposes of infiltration, data mining, and (here’s the one that really worries me) ganging up on bloggers, commenters and otherwise “real” people to smear enemies and distort the truth.

Using the assigned social media accounts we can automate the posting of content that is relevant to the persona. In this case there are specific social media strategy website RSS feeds we can subscribe to and then repost content on twitter with the appropriate hashtags. In fact using hashtags and gaming some location based check-in services we can make it appear as if a persona was actually at a conference and introduce himself/herself to key individuals as part of the exercise, as one example. There are a variety of social media tricks we can use to add a level of realness to all fictitious personas
I don’t know about you, but this concerns me greatly. It goes far beyond the mere ability for a government stooge, corporation or PR firm to hire people to post on sites like this one. They are talking about creating the illusion of consensus. And consensus is a powerful persuader. What has more effect, one guy saying BP is not at fault? Or 20 people saying it? For the weak minded, the number can make all the difference.
And another thing, this is just one little company of assholes. I can’t believe there aren’t others doing this already. From oil companies, political campaigns, PR firms, you name it. Public opinion means big bucks. And let’s face it, what these guys are talking about is easy.
Just today I was listening to Stand Up with Pete Dominic on XM’s POTUS channel. He was talking about the Wisconsin labor attack and how he had seen a lot of people email and contact the show in support of the Teachers there. Then he added a “but”: “I’ve also seen a lot of anti-labor people on Twitter…”
Really? I thought. How do we know if those are real people? Twitter has to be the easiest thing to fake and to automate with retweets and 180 characrer max sentences. To the extent that the propaganda technique known as “Bandwagon” is an effective form of persuasion, which it definitely is, the ability for a few people to infiltrate a blog or social media site and appear to be many people, all taking one position in a debate, all agreeing, for example, that so and so is not credible, or a crook, is an incredibly powerful weapon.
How many times have you seen a diary get posted that reports some revelatory yet unfavorable tidbit about someone only to see a swarm of commenters arrive who hijack the thread, distract with a bunch of irrelevant nonsense, start throwing unsubstantiated accusations and ad hominem attacks to where before you know it, everyone’s pretty much forgotten what the diary said in the first place.
Some times diaries deserve to be swarmed. But what if a diary is swarmed and it’s really just one asshole working for a law firm that represents the oil company your diary was attacking?
I don’t know about you, but it matters to me what fellow progressives think. I consider all views. And if there appears to be a consensus that some reporter isn’t credible, for example, or some candidate for congress in another state can’t be trusted, I won’t base my entire judgment on it, but it carries some weight.
That’s me. I believe there are many people though who will base their judgment on rumors and mob attacks. And for those people, a fake mob can be really effective.
I have no idea what to do about this problem, except just make sure everyone knows its possible, and so watches out for it.

Lastly, some here are falling for the meme that HB Gary personel, and especially Aaron Barr himself, are incompetent buffoons. This is a mistake. While Mr Barr may be a fool, he was not the one who fell for a spear fishing attack that allow an, apparently, 16 year old girl to gain access to their servers.
I have rummaged through the leaked email, some of which contain resumes for employees there. These guys are recruiting people with incredibly advanced skills from many different agencies and top universities like MIT.
HB Gary and its subsidiary, HB Gary Federal, as well as Berinco and Palantir, employed a lot of extremely qualified people with backgrounds in the NSA and ATT and other major organizations/corporations. These guys are pros.
Aaron Barr may be a mockery to Anonymous for running his mouth off. As he should be. But he’s not an idiot and he wasn’t the one who gave out the company’s keys to a 16 yo girl.
I wanted to make this clear because it is in the interests of government and propagandists, and anyone else who wants this story to go away to try and blow all this off as one little company who wrote a proposal no one even read and who isn’t even competent enough to protect its own servers so no one should pay any attention at all to what they were up to.
That is the narrative being spun, even here on this site, and it is entirely fictitious.
We are under attack. And the attackers are damn good at what they do. Pretending they’re not, or that this isn’t happening isn’t going to make it better.
I do believe there are limitation to the effectiveness of such an attack on this site and others like it. This isn’t twitter, and bullshit only goes so far, no matter how many personas are spreading it.
But everyone needs to be aware that not only are sites like this a target of attack, but that Daily Kos has been mentioned specifically as a target of attack.
Maybe this whole thing will be liberating. Maybe people will develop stronger spines and not be so easily swayed by raving mobs.
UPDATE: From another email, I found a government solicitation for this “Persona Management Software”.
This confirms that in fact, the US Gov. is attempting to use this kind of technology. But it appears from the solicitation it is contracted for use in foreign theaters like Afghanistan and Iraq. I can’t imagine why this is posted on an open site. And whenthis was discovered by a couple of HB Gary staffers, they weren’t too happy about it either:
The first email just had the title, “WTF Dude?”
The response email said, “This is posted on open source. Are you fucking serious?”
