What the hell,
Sched: celebs,
If it makes us, turn-
Our heads!
It’s our turn,

‘Make Poverty History’ message banned in Britain

Mon Sep 12, 2:53 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) – The coalition at the forefront of a British campaign to fight poverty in Africa has been banned from advertising on radio and television after the nation’s media watchdog decided it was a “political” organisation.

Make Poverty History, a coalition of more than 500 charities and social groups, said Monday it was “disappointed” by the decision from OFCOM, just days before world leaders gather in New York where the plight of the world’s poor is on the agenda of the World Summit at UN headquarters.

Its advertisement — in which the likes of rock star Bono and model Claudia Schiffer snap their fingers every three seconds, symbolising how often a child dies as a result of poverty somewhere in the world — has been on the air for several months.

Despite the fact that no one lodged a complaint, OFCOM said Make Poverty History was “wholly or mainly political” in that it sought to “achieve important changes” to British and Western government policy.

For that reason, it said, the advertisement can no longer be aired.

Adrian Lovett of the development charity Oxfam, a member of the Make Poverty History coordination team, said the global poverty issue was not “party political”, but seen by millions as “the great moral issue of our time”.

“We’re disappointed with this decision,” he said. “This advertisement simply highlights the fact that a child dies every three seconds because of preventable poverty.”

Make Poverty History was behind a large peaceful march in Edinburgh in July that called for robust action on aid, trade and debt from the Group of Eight leading industrialised nations to combat endemic poverty in Africa.

Embattled FEMA Director Mike Brown Resigns

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer 51 minutes ago

WASHINGTON – Federal Emergency Management Agency director Mike Brown said Monday he has resigned “in the best interest of the agency and best interest of the president,” three days after losing his onsite command of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

“The focus has got to be on FEMA, what the people are trying to do down there,” Brown told The Associated Press.

His decision was not a surprise. Brown was abruptly recalled to Washington on Friday, a clear vote of no confidence from his superiors at the White House and the Department of Homeland Security. Brown had been roundly criticized for FEMA’s bearish response to the hurricane, which has caused political problem for Bush and fellow Republicans.

“I’m turning in my resignation today,” Brown said. “I think it’s in the best interest of the agency and the best interest of the president to do that and get the media focused on the good things that are going on, instead of me.”

Brown, who said he last talked to Bush five or six days ago, said the resignation was his idea. He spoke on Saturday to White House chief of staff Andy Card, who did not request his departure, according to Brown.

He said he feared he was becoming a distraction to FEMA’s relief effort.

“I came to the conclusion that this was in the best interest of not just the administration and not just me, but FEMA,” he said. “They need to be focused on the continuing efforts in the Gulf.”

Shortly after Brown was recalled to Washington last week, officials close to the FEMA director said he would likely resign. They said that even before Katrina, Brown had been planning on leaving the administration late this fall to go into the private sector.

Roberts Says Judges Play a Limited Role

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 19 minutes ago

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court nominee John Roberts said Monday that justices are servants of the law, playing a limited government role, as the Senate opened confirmation hearings on President Bush’s choice to be the nation’s 17th chief justice.

“A certain humility should characterize the judicial role,” the 50-year-old Roberts told the Judiciary Committee in a brief statement. “Judges and justices are servants of the law, not the other way around.”

The appellate judge likened judges to baseball umpires, saying that “they make sure everybody plays by the rules, but it is a limited role. Nobody ever went to a ballgame to see the umpire.”

The drama of Roberts’ swearing-in and his short statement capped a half day in which Democrats and Republicans sparred over the legitimacy of questioning him about divisive issues. Arguments about ideology and judicial activism also marked the hours devoted to opening statements from the 18-member panel.

Speaking without notes, Roberts addressed the committee for about five minutes — half the time each of 18 senators had been allotted for opening statements before he took the oath and made his remarks. He will answer questions from senators at much greater length on Tuesday.

“I come before the committee with no agenda. I have no platform,” Roberts told the panel.

Bob Johannessen, spokesman for the state Department of Health and Hospitals, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has 25,000 body bags on hand in Louisiana.

Asked if authorities expected as many as 25,000 bodies, he said: “We don’t know what to expect.”

“It means we’re prepared,” Johannessen said.

45 Bodies Found at New Orleans Hospital

NEW ORLEANS – Forty-five bodies have been found at a hospital that was abandoned more than a week ago after it was surrounded by floodwaters unleashed by Hurricane Katrina, a state health official said Monday.

The bodies were located Sunday at Memorial Medical Center, said Bob Johannesen, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Hospitals. Johannesen said the bodies were those of patients, but he had no other information.

The Louisiana death toll rose to 279 on Monday, up from 197 on Sunday, Johannesen said.

On Sunday, reporters were kept at a distance from Memorial Medical by law enforcement officers as workers removed bodies from the hospital, situated in the city’s Uptown section.

The 317-bed hospital, owned by TenetHealthcare Corp., remained closed Monday and was still partially surrounded by floodwaters.

FLASHBACK: New Orleans Court Opens Door To Searches Without Warrants

WDSU | March 29, 2004

NEW ORLEANS — It’s a groundbreaking court decision that legal experts say will affect everyone: Police officers in Louisiana no longer need a search or arrest warrant to conduct a brief search of your home or business.

Leaders in law enforcement say it will keep officers safe, but others argue it’s a privilege that could be abused.

The decision in United States v. Kelly Gould, No. 0230629cr0, was made March 24 by the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Blackwater Mercenaries: Coming Soon to Your Town

Kurt Nimmo | September 12 2005

It is now obvious how martial law (not officially declared as such) will work in America in the wake of the devastation of New Orleans. Instead of federal troops or an influx of National Guard troops sent to “restore order” (the latter mandated in our now anachronistic Constitution; see Article 1, Section 8) and empowered to “suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions,” in Louisiana the state and federal governments have brazenly violated the Constitution by sending in Blackwater Security and other private goon squads. “Heavily armed paramilitary mercenaries from the Blackwater private security firm, infamous for their work in Iraq, are openly patrolling the streets of New Orleans,” write Jeremy Scahill and Daniela Crespo. “Some of the mercenaries say they have been ‘deputized’ by the Louisiana governor; indeed some are wearing gold Louisiana state law enforcement badges on their chests and Blackwater photo identification cards on their arms. They say they are on contract with the Department of Homeland Security and have been given the authority to use lethal force.”

Doctors Euthanized Katrina Victims

Australian Daily Telegraph | September 12 2005

DOCTORS working in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans killed critically ill patients rather than leave them to die in agony as they evacuated.

With gangs of rapists and looters rampaging through wards in the flooded city, senior doctors took the harrowing decision to give massive overdoses of morphine to those they believed could not make it out alive.

One New Orleans doctor told how she “prayed for God to have mercy on her soul” after she ignored every tenet of medical ethics and ended the lives of patients she had earlier fought to save.

Her heart-rending account has been corroborated by a hospital orderly and by local government officials.

One emergency official, William Forest McQueen, said: “Those who had no chance of making it were given a lot of morphine and lain down in a dark place to die.”

Euthanasia is illegal in Louisiana and the doctors spoke only on condition on anonymity.

[Ed note: so medical aid is not necessary, but military aid is?]

Mexico, Holland send troops to Biloxi

Sun Herald | September 9, 2005
BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK

COMMENT:

A very trusted friend who works at a shooting range here in Austin reported to me that on Friday of last week, Dutch troops were at the range target shooting. Furthermore, additional regular US Army troops were present sighting their rifles! We have ARMED Mexican and Dutch troops in the United States under the pretense of helping with the Katrina recovery effort.

The Marines have landed in Biloxi — the Mexican Marines.

And Dutch Marines as well.

Armed Mexican Troops Invade US

For the first time since the 19th Century, Mexican troops landed Friday on U.S. soil, sent from the Mexican Navy ship ARM Papaloapan anchored near the USS Bataan. The Mexican ship’s name means, “River of Butterflies.”

Marines from Mexico, Holland and the U.S. are part of an international Hurricane Katrina cleanup effort building up on ships about 20 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Four Canadian ships are on the way.

“Our President called George Bush and three days later we came here,” said Oscar Martinez Pretelin, a fleet or admiral rank officer aboard the Papaloapan, a 440-foot-long U.S.-built troop landing ship. Vincente Fox is the president of Mexico.

“We are honored to help the United States,” Pretelin told press and television reporters Thursday aboard the Mexican ship.
