For the last several days at least 6,000 US soldiers along with approximately 4,000 Iraqi soldiers (read – members of the Kurdish Peshmerga and Shia Badr Army) were laying siege to the city of Tal-Afar, near Mosul in northern Iraq. It is estimated that 90% of the residents have left their homes because of the violence and destruction of the siege, as well as to avoid home raids and snipers.

The Fallujah model is being applied yet again, albeit on a smaller scale. I haven’t received any reports yet of biometrics being used (retina scans, finger printing, bar coding of human beings) like in Fallujah, but there are other striking similarities to the tactics used in November.

While the US military claims to have killed roughly 200 “terrorists” in the operation, reports from the ground state that most of the fighters inside the city had long since left to avoid direct confrontation with the overwhelming military force (a basic tenet of guerrilla warfare).

Again like Fallujah, most of the families who fled are staying in refugee camps outside the city in tents amidst horrible conditions in the inferno-like heat of the Iraqi summer.

The LA Times reported that Ezzedin Dowla, a Turkmen leader in the area said, “Families are homeless and the government has not provided any shelter, food or drink for them.” Nor has the US military.

The targets of this military operation are the Sunni Turkmen who are politically on the side of the Sunni Arabs. Most Sunnis will be voting against the constitution during the coming vote of October, 15th.

The Cheney Administration is desperate for something it can spin as “good news” from Iraq; thus, it most certainly behooves them to have the referendum on the constitution to boast about. But in order to do so, the voting ability and power of the Sunni (and Sunni Turkmen) must be severely compromised, as well as punishment meted out for rightfully assuming what will be a Sunni no-vote on the constitution.

Both the Cheney Administration and its current puppet-government in Iraq benefit from destroying the voting (and living) ability of the majority of people in the “Sunni triangle,” so we have the operation in Tal-Afar, most likely to be followed by similar operations in al-Qa’im, Haditha, Samarra, and possibly more.

In Tal-Afar, the propaganda spewed by the US military (and Iraqi “government”) was that the operation was to fight terrorists coming into Iraq via Syria. If that were true, why did the US military remove troops from the border with Syria who were supposed to be preventing infiltration by foreign fighters? Instead of guarding the border, as they should, they engaged in the operation against Iraqi Sunni Turkmen. Working in unison, the US military launched the heavy-handed attack with the “authorization” of Prime Minister Ibrahm Jaafari, the leader of the Shia Dawa Party. Jaafari even went so far as to venture to Tal-Afar on Tuesday to visit troops and have his photograph taken.

“Authorization” was given by the Iraqi government for the attack on Tal-Afar, just as “authorization” was given by then interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi for the November, 2004 massacre in Fallujah. “Authorization,” when the US military would never, ever allow any foreign power jurisdiction over American forces, least of all a puppet government.

Correspondents with Azzaman media in Tal-Afar miraculously made it into the city and reported that residents are disputing reports that US and Iraqi soldiers have killed scores of “insurgents.” Like Fallujah, these residents of Tal-Afar are reporting that most of the people killed were civilians who had no place to go so they chose to stay in their homes. People also stayed because they feared persecution at the hands of the Peshmerga and Badr Army.

I recently interviewed an Iraqi man from that area at the Peoples’ UN conference in Perugia, Italy. He told me, “Most people in Mosul and Tal-Afar would rather be detained by the Americans now, because they know if Iraqi soldiers or Iraqi police detain them they will be tortured severely, and possibly killed. This gives you an idea of how bad it is with these Iraqi soldiers, even in the shadow of what the Americans are still doing in Abu Ghraib.”

As for “foreign fighters,” one of the Azzaman correspondents quoted a resident of Tal-Afar as saying, “We used to hear (from news reports) of the presence of some Arab (foreign) fighters in the city, but we have seen none of them.”

Life in Iraq remains a living hell. Blood flowed in the streets of Khadamiya yesterday as a horrendous car bomb killed 112 people in the predominantly Shia neighborhood. And once again, calls of solidarity were made from the nearby Sunni neighborhood of Adhamiya and residents emerged from their homes to help their brothers and sisters across the river, just as they did after the panic and chaos which recently took the lives of nearly 1,000 Shia.

The horrendous totals from yesterday were 160 dead, 570 wounded Iraqis as the result of the string of attacks and at least a dozen car bombs. The blowback from the Jafaari “authorized” state-sponsored terrorism in Tal-Afar took little time to materialize in the capital city.

If Jafaari was more honest with his press appearances, along with his photo-op in Tal-Afar he should have had his photo taken amidst the charred, smoking body parts strewn about the streets of Khadamiya, which was a result (albeit just as horrific) of his Tal-Afar “authorization.”

On that note, Jalal Talabani, Iraq’s puppet president, was in a press conference in Washington DC with Mr. Bush just hours before the blowback began.

Meanwhile, one of my friends in Baghdad writes me, “Dear Dahr, how are you dear pal? I am very sorry for what happened after Hurricane Katrina. It is a real tragedy. I hope none of your friends or family was affected. It is a tragedy which makes one speechless.”

This when he goes to work each day hoping to make it home alive to see his wife and newborn daughter.

And another of my friends in Baghdad wrote me recently, “I’m so sorry that I didn’t email you the previous days … the situation in Tal-Afar has become so much worse for the people. It is terrible what is going on there and nobody can say anything because as usual the military operation is still going on and they are trying to keep all the media out. They have also started another operation in another area of al-Anbar province and they will soon start one in Samarra.”

My interpreter when I’m in Iraq, Abu Talat, has been willing to take the risk of working with me there. To give you an idea of the lengths he’s willing to go to, he gave me the green light to come to Iraq last November, just before the massacre in Fallujah began. It is safe to say times were quite tense then, with kidnappings and beheadings having long since become the norm.

“The Minister of Defense is threatening not only Fallujah but all of the Ramadi Governorate, I can tell you very surely about that,” he wrote in a recent email to me and a colleague who was hoping to enter Iraq to work as a reporter. (Today, US warplanes began dropping bombs inside the city of Ramadi.)

“No one can support you working here. We are having a very critical situation. For this reason, I think that coming to Iraq in this critical time is not accepted. I was very, very welcoming to any of your friends, Dahr, but not in this time. Sorry, but for your own safety. Take good care of yourself.”

Today at least 30 more Iraqis have died in violence across their occupied country and it will only continue to worsen.

[b.frog] UPDATE: Terror Drill Sunday

The TTC Chairman’s office told me that this Sunday’s terror drill is also being co-ordinated with TD Centre and Royal Trust Tower. There is also an Emergency Management Program Committee which Toronto’s Mayor Miller is on. No confirmation yet from the Mayor’s office that this is indeed so, and what if any role this committee is playing in the drill.

I’m now told that the drill is running from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm

What I had referred to as ‘Joint Commission on Chemical Biological Nuclear (threats, events?)’ is in fact Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Response Team or CBRN Response Team. It was set up by the Province of Ontario following the September 11, 2001 attacks, and receives its funding from the Province.

However, Minister Kwinter’s office (Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, under which is Emergency Management Ontario) tells me that the Province is not involved, and that it is organized by the City of Toronto.

When I asked who heads up Emergency Management Ontario, I was told it was Julian Fantino. I’ve been playing phone tag with a spokesperson from that department, and have no further details at this time.

The original media report by Bob Comsic, CFRB was based on a story he remembered seeing in the July 8 Toronto Star, where Rick Ducharme of TTC was quoted as saying an exercise will take place this fall, involving the army. I haven’t seen the article myself, just going by what Comsic tells me. CFRB will be covering the event on Sunday. Their newsroom number is 416-323-7401.

I include below the original story sent Thursday Sept 15, as well as links to back up my claim of ‘During both the attacks of 9/11 and 7/7 in London of this year drills mirroring the actual attack were taking place at the exact same time’.

Is This Just A Test? (edited for correction)

On Sunday, September 18, 2005, a ‘terror drill’ will take place in Toronto. As confirmed by TTC spokeswoman, Marilyn Bolton, St Andrew subway station will be closed from 6 am until 12 noon for what she describes as a ‘pretty good event’.

Because a drill was being conducted at the very locations and times of the London bombings on July 7, 2005, exactly mirroring the attacks, I think it prudent to detail as much information before it happens here.

Bolton told me that those involved in this ‘mystery plot’ are the Emergency Medical Services, Toronto Fire Department, Toronto Police Services, The City of Toronto Emergency Planning Department, The Toronto Transit Commission and a Joint Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Response Team. The Toronto Police Services are
co-ordinating the simulation, and that they are putting out a press release on Friday, September 16.

I know of one media report concerning this already, taking place between Monday and Tuesday, September 12, 13, on Toronto radio station CFRB. It was after hearing of this second hand that I began to make a few phone calls. I was already under heightened awareness after hearing Anne MacLellan on CBC news, Monday September 12 tell media that there is a need to ‘practice terror drills in real time.’

The following is my account of those calls, and what I’ve learned from them. Please keep in mind that this an incomplete investigation into the details of this Sundays terror drill, and that I was continually told to contact the Toronto Police to find out more, which I have not done.

The first call went out to Access Toronto 416-338-0338, where I received the Emergency Planning Department number, 416-392-4554, and was told the exercise is taking place in Councillor Kyle Rae’s ward. Councillor Rae was unavailable when I tried, and his assistant was reluctant to pass a message on to him because he is not my councillor. Further I was told Councillor Rae has no information regarding this event. His phone number is 416-392-7903.

I called my Councillor, Joe Pantalone, and was unable to speak with him, but left a message, and expressed my concerns about terror drills, and the incredible coincidences of attacks taking place at the same time. A staffer assured me she will try and find out what’s going on, and get back to me, but I’ve yet to hear anything.

The Emergency Planning Department offered up 3 names who are co-ordinating this exercise for the city, Greg Spasyna, Robert Tavner, and Warren Leonard, Manager – Office of Emergency Management. It was initially difficult to get those names, and when I asked to speak with one of them I was told they are in a meeting.

Isn’t that always the way?

I asked to leave a message directly on their voice mail, where I was discouraged from doing so, and that a message would be passed along. I insisted, and was put through, to, wait for it, a dead line. I phoned back, only to be disconnected immediately. The third time I called, it went directly to the answering machine. I haven’t tried
them again.

Marilyn Bolton is with TTC Public Affairs. This is the person who contacted me after my original queries with the TTC, where I was told to ask the Police who was involved. I mentioned that I shouldn’t have to ask the Police for information regarding the TTC, and asked again for the point person from the TTC. I was told it is through their safety department, but couldn’t get a name of anyone in charge there, again referred to the Police. Being persistent, I was told someone from the safety department would contact me. I’m still waiting for that call.

It is Marilyn Bolton who informed me of a forthcoming press release from the Toronto Police Services, and that it can be found sometime Friday September 16, on the Canada News Wire website. Maybe she means this one, http://www.newswire.ca/en/ .

Bolton confirmed the event is taking place between 6 am and noon on Sunday, and that an advisory will go out instructing people all access to St. Andrew Subway station will be closed for this drill. Shuttle buses will be made available to take riders between Union and Osgoode stations. John O’Grady is the liason working with the police until ‘the clock starts ticking’ then General Manager Rick Ducharme takes over.

TTC Chair, Howard Moscoe, returned my call, but at the exact moment I asked if he could shed light on the upcoming terror drill, the phone went dead. No dial tone, no busy signal, nothing. For nearly 15 minutes I tried every phone, disconnecting and reconnecting. Still nothing. After returning from a pay phone to ask the phone company what happened, it was working again, and a message from Moscoe trying back after the disconnection. I’ve been unable to reach him since. His number is 416-392-4027, but apparently he will not be available until after the weekend.

Finally, I tried the Mayor’s Office. David Miller was ‘in a meeting’, but I expressed my concerns and asked to speak with somebody in his office who may know what’s going on. His assistant returned my call, was unaware of ay terror drill taking place this weekend, and didn’t know if the Mayor was either. I expressed my surpise that no one in the Mayor’s office would know about this, especially when it is being co-ordinated with The City of Toronto, Emergency Medical Services, The Toronto Police Services, Fire Department, etc.

I insisted that he pass along my concern, and the best assurance I received is that he would contact the TTC himself, and if in fact there was a drill going on, then he would notify the Mayor.

To all the people I spoke with I expressed my interest in this matter because of the London July 7 bombings, and that I was searching for all the players involved in this weekends events. I think besides knowing who is involved, including any private firms and the people directly responsible for the drill, we should have a full understanding of the type of drill being conducted. We have a clue with the Joint Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Response Team.

So, I ask you fellow citizens, please be aware that this drill this weekend is indeed taking place in Toronto this weekend. During both the attacks of 9/11 and 7/7 in London of this year drills mirroring the actual attack were taking place at the exact same time.

In all my calls this past two days I mentioned this fact concerning the London bombings as reported by the BBC and CBC, who both interviewed Peter Power, of Visor Consultants, who told the media “At half past nine this morning we were actually running an exercise for a company of over a thousand people in London based on simultaneous bombs going off precisely at the railway stations where it happened this morning, so I still have the hairs on the back of my neck standing up right now”.

Yeah, no kidding.

MKULTRA: CIA Mind Control

For many Americans, the 1950s were a docile decade. In U.S. history books, the period is mostly portrayed as a mellow, orderly one, especially in light of the social upheavals that followed in the 1960s. But for the CIA, the “I Like Ike” years were packed with adventure and action, much of it conducted outside of the public’s view. Few programs were sheltered with more secrecy than the Agency’s mind control experiments, identified together with the code-name MKULTRA.

Concerned about rumors of communist brainwashing of POWs during the Korean war, in April 1953 CIA Director Allen Dulles authorized the MKULTRA program, which would later become notorious for the unusual and sometimes inhumane tests that the CIA financed. Reviewing the experiments five years later, one secrecy-conscious CIA auditor wrote: “Precautions must be taken not only to protect operations from exposure to enemy forces but also to conceal these activities from the American public in general. The knowledge that the agency is engaging in unethical and illicit activities would have serious repercussions in political and diplomatic circles.”

Though many of the documents related to MKULTRA were destroyed by the CIA in 1972, some records relating to the program have made it into the public domain, and the work of historians, investigative reporters, and various congressional committees has resulted in the release of enough information to make MKULTRA one of the most disturbing instances of intelligence community abuse on record. As writer Mark Zepezauer puts it, “the surviving history is nasty enough.”

The most notorious MKULTRA experiments were the CIA’s pioneering studies of the drug that would years later feed the heads of millions: lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD. The CIA was intrigued by the drug, and harbored hopes that acid or a similar drug could be used to clandestinely disorient and manipulate target foreign leaders. (The Agency would consider several such schemes in its pursuit of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who they wanted to send into a drug-induced stupor or tirade during a public or live radio speech.) LSD was also viewed as a way to loosen tongues in CIA interrogations.

On July 19, Denzel Washington appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to discuss his role in the Manchurian Candidate. Saying that his character and others are carted off to be “manipulated” after being attacked during Desert Storm, Washington addressed the real-life implications behind this fictional drama:

For a quarter of a century, a close friend of mine, a Harvard classmate, has believed that the Central Intelligence Agency murdered his father, a United States government scientist. Believing this means, in my friend’s words, “leaving the known universe,” the one in which it is innocently accepted that an agency of the American government would never do such a thing. My friend has left this known universe, even raising his father’s body from the grave where it had lain for 40 years to test the story the C.I.A. told him about his death. The evidence on the body says that the agency may have lied. But knowing this has not healed my friend. When I ask him what he has learned from his ordeal, he says, “Never dig up your father.” Then he laughs, and the look on his face is wild, bitter and full of pain.

Bush: Rebuilding Must Address Inequality

WASHINGTON – President Bush said Friday that the Gulf Coast must be rebuilt with an eye toward wiping out the persistent poverty and racial injustice plain to all in the suffering of the black and the poor in Hurricane Katrina’s wake.

tell me: what has his administration done about this over the last 5 years?

except be the first President in history to refuse to meet with the NAACP?

“As we clear away the debris of a hurricane, let us also clear away the legacy of inequality,” Bush said during a national prayer service with other political leaders and religious figures from the affected region at the National Cathedral.”

he is using religion to add ballast to his hot air.

Also Friday, White House officials said that taxpayers will pay the bill for the massive reconstruction program for the hurricane ravaged-Gulf Coast and that the huge expense will worsen the nation’s budget deficit.

of course it will.

and then we’ll have a massive recession, and then martial law.

duh.

being solemn is cool, it shows they really care.

Before Bush’s remarks, Bishop T.D. Jakes, head of 30,000-member Potter’s House church in Dallas, delivered a powerful sermon in which he called upon Americans to “dare to discuss the unmentionable issues that confront us” and to not rest until the poor are raised to an acceptable living standard.

“Katrina, perhaps, she has done something to this nation that needed to be done,” Jakes said. “We can no longer be a nation that overlooks the poor and the suffering, that continues past the ghetto on our way to the Mardi Gras.”

the extree screw-ups needed to be done, extree damage, extree death…

after all, this sets a great example of what we should do to the poor…

err, i mean, do for the poor…

Bush, faced with continuing questions about whether help would have been sent more quickly to the storm zone if most victims had not been poor and black, echoed those themes in his brief remarks.

hmph.

oh well… i’m guessing they apologize?

i mean, white-liberal-guilt is awesome…

unless it’s enough…

or not. whatever.

As on Thursday, when Bush called for “bold action” to overcome poverty and discrimination, he offered no specific actions that should be taken.

any web-savvy peeps out there?

through my extensive black krishnaverse research and blogging, i’ve noticed something that is at best a pattern, and at worst… well, who the hell knows.

how come all the website links that make the government look bad are really, really long (see above and all the way below) while most others are not? are they easier to track this way? more annoying to post?

here’s something that’s supposed to tell us how to justify feeling bad, after all, this article tells us it’s “normal” and just a sign of the times.
